the church of haiti

So then, as we have the opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith” Galatians 6:10

As the church, we have a very focused responsibility to the church of Haiti. As you consider where to give funds for relief in Haiti I would suggest checking out Churches Helping Churches. James MacDonald and Mark Driscoll teamed up after the earthquake in Haiti to respond to the specific need to care for the churches in Haiti. They want to make sure the church of Haiti, though staggered, finds it’s legs, straightens itself and begins to pour into the physical and spiritual care of their fellow Haitians.

On the site James MacDonald lays out a clear mission asking one single question, “Who will help the church?”

The first reports we have been able to glean are of a ruined 1,500 seat worship center recently dedicated as a lighthouse for the gospel in Port-au-Prince- now just a mangled heap of stone and steel. The second piece of news that reached us was of a smaller church whose place of worship is wrecked and whose pastor and family are dead. The third message that got through the tangled communication grid was from a woman in our church just home from a Haitian orphanage whose founder cannot find his 2 sisters, brother and father.

All of this has sounded in my ears like a military drummer leading a processional of pain, and I cannot escape the cadence of a single interrogative, Who will help the church? Hour by hour this week, and even in the quiet moments of sleeplessness, God’s Spirit has been pursuing me with a question I cannot answer: Who will help the church?

There are a lot of places to give to support Haiti right now. Even the iconic barren homepage of Google has been desecrated with a plea for support by the folks at Google. All these places are good, but as the church it is our first responsibility to the church and I would ask that you consider giving to this mission.
