some new wheels

We know that many of you are following along from different states and are unable to be a part of the “normal life” here in Cincinnati (as much as we would love for you to be here!). So I thought we would put our latest need out there for you to have the opportunity to throw in from afar.

the church of haiti

So then, as we have the opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith” Galatians 6:10

As the church, we have a very focused responsibility to the church of Haiti. As you consider where to give funds for relief in Haiti I would suggest checking out Churches Helping Churches. James MacDonald and Mark Driscoll teamed up after the earthquake in Haiti to respond to the specific need to care for the churches in Haiti. They want to make sure the church of Haiti, though staggered, finds it’s legs, straightens itself and begins to pour into the physical and spiritual care of their fellow Haitians.

world vision gift catalog

If you haven’t seen this already then this is something you definitely need to check out. It is the World Vision Gift Catalog. It is a giving service through World Vision that allows you to give gifts that will supply the basic needs of a family. From one year of education ($32) to my personal favorite… the goat ($75). Here is what World Vision says about the gift of a goat…

Goats nourish hungry children and families with healthy milk, cheese, and yogurt. Goats also give a much-needed income boost by providing offspring and extra dairy products for sale at the market. A healthy dairy goat can give up to 16 cups of milk a day. Goat milk is easier to digest than cow’s milk and is an excellent source of calcium, protein, and other essential nutrients that growing children need. Goats are practical animals — flourishing in harsh climates while producing valuable manure to fertilize crops and vegetable gardens.

You can also attach the gift to a friend who would receive a really nice card. The card describes the gift and it’s benefit for the family receiving the gift. This is a great gift for your children or for the person who “already has everything”. Check it out!

Jesus and Money

What does Jesus have to say about money? This is a collection of most of the teachings Jesus had on money. Several of these stories are repeated in various forms throughout the Gospels and the repeats are not included here. Take time to ponder these and think through what this means to us today.

What is tithing?

For The Glory… Money (pt.1)
The word tithe literally means “a tenth”. It is rooted in the OT idea of giving a tenth of what you own. A closer look into Scriptures and we discover the OT concept of the tithe is not as simple as giving 10%. There were actually 3 tithes recorded in the OT, each slightly different from the other. The total amount given came to 20% or possibly, at times, up to 30% each year. Below is the breakdown of each tithe:

Tabitha’s Closet

goodwill is going down!Has anyone been to Goodwill lately? Maybe you’ve noticed their new line of “high quality” donation-wear complete with fresh new “high-quality” prices to match. Seriously, walking into your local Goodwill these days is like walking into a Walmart, except everything isn’t new, the floors are sticky, and the air is thick with the musty-perfume only age can bring. I don’t know if Goodwill is looking to flip it’s image into the next discount retailer or simply adjusting for inflation, but the last time I checked they get their inventory for uuummmmm… FREE! So no matter which way you slice that pie, it doesn’t make sense for them to charge the under-resourced and poor $6 for a t-shirt given to them for FREE! Where’s the goodwill in that?

This is why I love what Kim Martin (a woman in our 610 community) is doing with a group of other women in the area. They have launched a new venture - Tabitha’s Closet - to bring fresh, clean, lightly worn clothing to the poor and homeless in our community for FREE! The real kind of free. The kind where a family who has no money to spend on needed clothing can walk in, find what they need, and walk out without the need to pull out the latest super-saver-frequent-shopper-discount card or even pay at all. How awesome is that?

Here is how we can help…
