some new wheels

We know that many of you are following along from different states and are unable to be a part of the “normal life” here in Cincinnati (as much as we would love for you to be here!). So I thought we would put our latest need out there for you to have the opportunity to throw in from afar.

don’t limit your imagination

Sometimes we are so trapped by our perspective we fail to use our God-given imagination to dream up a possibility outside of our current circumstances. But along comes someone with a prophetic voice that says something in just the right way, or maybe the shower water hits our front temporal lobe in just the right way to create a moment. One of those times when you are like, “Of course. I can’t believe I never saw that before.” It’s the moment the Newtonian apple finally hits our head.

the church of haiti

So then, as we have the opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith” Galatians 6:10

As the church, we have a very focused responsibility to the church of Haiti. As you consider where to give funds for relief in Haiti I would suggest checking out Churches Helping Churches. James MacDonald and Mark Driscoll teamed up after the earthquake in Haiti to respond to the specific need to care for the churches in Haiti. They want to make sure the church of Haiti, though staggered, finds it’s legs, straightens itself and begins to pour into the physical and spiritual care of their fellow Haitians.

do something

The problem in Haiti is continuing to grow as supplies are having a hard time finding there way to the people who need them. To make matters worse, the infrastructure in Haiti barely survived when things were “normal” but now that things are in utter chaos it is near impossible to use the old system in any way. Right now there are agencies and churches, governments and neighbors all trying to figure out how they can help the hurting, dying, and broken. But what about us? What about the people like you and me who live in the middle of Nowherenearhaiti? What can we do?

compass church

I spoke at Compass Church this past Sunday. If you don’t remember, Compass is the church who lets us use their facility rent-free once a month. It was a great time to spend a Sunday with the people who so generously lets us meet their without paying a dime. The worship team was incredible and the service went well as I wrapped up their series on Compassionate Art. I spoke from Philippians 2:1-16 and talked about the God who is working in us as we are working out our salvation.

happy birthday leslie newbigin

Leslie Newbigin would have been 100 years old today. His words and influence have been profound in calling the church back to it’s missional roots. Here are a few of my favorite Newbigin quotes and a link to read more about his life and work.

“The church… is not meant to call men and women out of the world into a safe religious enclave but to call them out in order to send them back as agents of God’s kingship.”

Soundtrack.

Jeremy Riddle’s album, The Now and Not Yet, has been playing constantly as I work. In many ways this album has become the soundtrack of the church plant. His lyrics are filled with a beautiful mixture of truth and grace, and his voice carries a deep passion for the church - to see her become who she is called to be.  The album is a reminder for all of us to get unstuck from the routine of going to church and begin being the church to our neighbors and our world. Check out these lyrics from “Among the Poor”
